Disabling the startup sound on a Mac

One of the first annoyances i stumbled upon when i got my MacBook Pro was that every time you started it, it would play an annoying chime to let everyone around know that a Mac has just started.

The startup sound would still be ok if I only used the computer at home. However, I use my laptop both for school and for business, I cannot have it interrupting people the middle of a class or a meeting.

To my great surprise there wasn’t even a simple way of turning this behavior off, after googling around I finally found a simple and working method of turning of the startup sound, regardless of the general sound settings.

Download StartupSound.prefPane and install it. Once you have installed it you will find a new entry in the System Preferences panel where you can control the volume of the startup sound or disable it completely.
