Tip of the day: Taking screenshots in OS X

Coming from a mainly Linux and Windows background I found the way of taking screenshots in OS X a bit awkward at first. However, once I figured out all the options I had taking screenshots, I must admit that I’m not looking back anymore.

While there are several commercial tools for grabbing screenshots in all kinds of ways and processing them at the same time, I found that the basic functionality provided with the Mac operating system to be fully sufficient for my needs.

As you might know the shortcut for taking a screenshot is Cmd-Shift-3. This will take a regular screenshot of your entire screen.

A really neat addition to that is if you press Cmd-Shift-4, you will get a cross-hair. Press space and you will see a picture of a camera and the window under it highlighted. Now you can get a screenshot of only a specified window and nothing else, this really saves a lot of time otherwise wasted on cropping the images to remove useless stuff.
